Frequently Asked Questions
How is the match score calculated?
Keywords are extracted from the JD and weighted: must-have (50%), good-to-have (30%), bonus (20%). Seniority fit adds a second dimension to the overall score.
What is a good match score?
70%+ is a strong match. 50-70% is worth applying to with tailoring. Below 50% means significant gaps — use the Application Kit to strengthen your profile first.
How do I improve my match score?
Add missing keywords naturally into your experience bullets, align your summary with the role's requirements, and quantify your achievements with numbers.
Does seniority affect my score?
Yes. Seniority fit is scored separately using experience signals in your resume versus the JD. A senior role applied to by a junior candidate will score lower.
Can I match against multiple jobs?
Yes. Paste a different job description and re-run. Your resume context is remembered throughout your session.
Is match score the same as ATS score?
No. ATS score measures general resume quality. Match score is specific to one job and measures how well your profile fits that exact role's requirements.
Does Job Utils send my resume to the employer?
Never. Your resume stays in your browser session only. We do not send it to any employer or store it on our servers.
What should I do after seeing my match score?
If 70%+ — generate an Application Kit on the Find Jobs page. If below 70% — use the suggestions to improve your resume, then use the Resume Builder to polish it.
Do keyword frequency and position matter?
Yes, modestly. Terms that appear in your summary and most-recent role carry more weight than the same terms buried in projects from five years ago.
Should I mirror the JD wording exactly?
Close, but never copy-paste. Rephrase so it sounds like your own voice. ATSs match stems and synonyms, but human reviewers notice lifted sentences.
What about skills I have but did not list?
Add only genuine ones and place them near concrete evidence — a project, result or tool usage — not in a flat skills wall at the end.
Why is my score lower than I expected?
Common causes: JD uses different terminology for the same skill, seniority mismatch, or achievements phrased as responsibilities rather than outcomes.
Does job function/level get detected automatically?
Yes. We infer likely level from years of experience, scope language in the JD and leadership signals. It is a hint, not a verdict — verify before relying on it.
How often should I re-run the match?
Re-run every time you edit your resume or paste a different JD. The cost is zero and the feedback loop is fast.
Can I use match scores to pick which jobs to apply to?
Yes — treat it as a triage signal. Focus energy on 70%+ roles, and use lower-score roles only if the company or team is especially compelling.
